We are asked quite often how bars are affected by the current looming economy. E4's unexpected and rather abrupt closing this past weekend helps to answer this question. For the most part, bar sales along with the entire hospitality industry have been on the decline along with tips, which are the lifeline of the service industry's employees.
There are, of course, bars that are doing very well even in these tough times, such as American Junkie and The Lodge. Perhaps because they are the newest additions to the Scottsdale Nightlife or perhaps because they have truly captured their niche market - only time will tell.
Either way, E4's closing along with the rumored struggles/bankruptcyies of places like Whip Lounge, Six Lounge and Mickey's Hangover help to put things in perspective. No business is immune to the effects of the economy, and any good economist will tell you businesses need to stay ahead of the game to be successful.
When it comes to bars that can be a million different things ranging from having the best specialty drink menu to the best looking staff. Unfortunately, even with one of the coolest venues in all of Scottsdale, E4 did not have what it takes.
Call and listen to their somber voice message apologizing to NYE parties that made reservations, appreciate what you have, and go out to your favorite bar and tip the bartender!
